New eateries announced for downtown Silver Spring food hall

Commas expected to open mid-summer at Ellsworth Place

With cuisines ranging from Persian to Caribbean and Nepali, six more eateries are scheduled to join the upcoming Commas food hall in downtown Silver Spring’s Ellsworth Place, the mall’s owner announced Friday.

“We’ve been working hard to create an international dining experience like no other,” Trey Culpepper, managing director of operations for GBT Realty Corp., owner of Ellsworth Place, said in a press release. “Silver Spring is consistently named one of the nation’s most ethnically diverse cities, and Commas is a celebration of this diversity. In this space you can travel from continent to continent with every bite.”

The new eateries are 6 Skewers, The Champs Kitchen, Claude Have Mercy, Momo Hub, Nim Ali and Café Antigua by Nim Ali, according to the release.

Construction is nearing completion on the 13,000-square-foot global food hall on third floor of the shopping center purchased by GBT Realty Corp. in 2018. The eateries will begin opening mid-summer with an official grand opening set for September, according to the release.

“Admittedly, we have encountered several delays due to unexpected challenges in renovating this 70-year-old former Hecht department store building,” Culpepper said. “But now, we’re tackling the finishing touches and can’t wait to open the doors to share this highly sought amenity with the community.”

Among the new eateries, The Champs Kitchen is owned by Silver Spring resident and caterer Keyerra Pitts., who will be serving Caribbean flavors and classic dishes. The eatery 6 Skewers is expected to offer Persian fare while Claudius Kpakima, another Silver Spring-based chef, will focus on a “unique take on seafood with a menu that includes shrimp burgers, seafood hot dogs and seafood pizza” at Claude Have Mercy, according to the release.

Nepali flavors will be featured at Momo Hub at the second location of a Clarksville eatery. Nim Ali’s menu is expected to offer traditional Guatemalan street food flavors while Café Antigua by Nim Ali’s offering will include coffee and bakery items.

The eateries are expected to join previously announced food hall tenants Tokoa, which offers Philly-style cheese steaks; DMV Empanadas; and J&J Mex-Taqueria.
